Q.  What's the difference between cable modem and BPL?
A.

BPL has several advantages over cable modem. With a cable modem, you normally are limited to one cable jack in the house for high-speed Internet access. With BPL, you can surf from virtually anywhere in your home. Some areas only have access to one-way cable modems, which requires a phone line and a modem. BPL uses wireless technology and speeds that are always two-way. With one-way cable, you not only pay the cable modem cost, but also have to incur a phone line charge for a phone dedicated to Internet service.

Q.  Do you need an Ethernet card?
A.

It is highly recommended that users purchase an Ethernet card to enable faster setup of their BPL service. Keep the receipt, just in case you are one of the few users who do not require it.

Q.  What are the security components of BPL service?
A.

BPL employs two layers of security: DHCP-based MAC authentication and disabling peer-to-peer conversation.

Q.  If you change a MAC address, do you call Duquesne Broadband?
A.

Yes. Please call 1-800-387-0707 to find out more information.

Q.  Have you had interference, so far, with normal consumer electronic equipment (i.e. hair dryers, vacuums)?
A.

No.

Q.  Can you hook up to more than one computer in the house?
A.

Yes, but it requires a home network or router. Duquesne Broadband can refer customers to qualified vendors, but it does not support a home network.

Q.  What scenarios have led to interference?
A.

Limited amateur radio interference. An adjustment easily can be made to eliminate any interference.

Q.  Is that in the transmission line or point-of-use?
A.

Transmission line.

Q.  If you already have a home network, does anything have to be changed?
A.

Probably not, but our installer will have to stop by and make sure. This should be a relatively easy process. Our installer will make the network ready for use. Should this require additional work or hardware, there may be a cost, which the installer will discuss before starting any work.

Q.  Can more than one computer in the home have access?
A.

Yes, through home networking.

Q.  How much does a router or a home network cost?
A.

Wireless routers generally cost between $85 and $150. Costs per PC run an additional $40 to $80.

Q.  Is the router application specific to Duquesne Broadband?
A.

No.

Q.  Where does the router plug into if we have a home network?
A.

The CPE provided should be hooked to the router, which will be responsible for home networking.

Q.  If I hook up one computer now and want to hook up more computers later and buy a home network, is there a charge?
A.

Yes. Our authorized installers will be happy to assist you with your home networking needs and provide an estimated cost for their service prior to installing it.

Q.  If I get the standard plan, then want the premium plan later, can I make the switch?
A.

Yes. Call Duquesne Broadband at 1-866-387-0707 to inquire about switching levels of service.

Q.  If I take the standard plan, can I still use a search engine?
A.

Yes.

Q.  AOL offers filters (parental controls). Does BPL have filters?
A.

BPL is high-speed access only service. We do not provide software.

Q.  If AOL is my email provider, do I need BPL Premium?
A.

No. The purpose of the premium plan is to provide customers with email addresses for their high-speed connection.

Q.  If I have AOL Bring Your Own Access, and then get BPL Standard, will I have more than one AOL email address?
A.

Yes. AOL Bring Your Own Access rules apply and are subject to change. BPL operates independently of any AOL services you may have.

Q.  An ISP won't authenticate an email, would Duquesne Broadband authenticate that email?
A.

Yes. You will need to configure your email with POP and SMTP information.

Q.  Do I have to get the premium plan to receive emails away from home?
A.

No. The purpose of the premium plan is to provide customers with email addresses for their high-speed connection.

Q.  Can I access my network or email away from home?
A.

If you have the premium plan, Webmail is available through our website. If you have the standard plan, you may or may not be able to access your email, depending on which email service you use. If you run remote access software, such as PC Anywhere, you will be able to access your network away from home.

Q.  What do you recommend in terms of security systems?
A.

We recommend both a firewall, such as Norton Internet Security or the one included with Windows XP, and a virus scanning program, such as Norton, McAfee or PcCillin. Many routers made for home networking have firewall software included. Parental control software also can be used to block access to unauthorized websites.

Q.  Can I have Microsoft Outlook as an email client?
A.

Yes.

Q.  Is there any area in the country where BPL is running now?
A.

There are a few market trials across the country. Duquesne Broadband is a leader in the marketplace.

Q.  Can I try BPL on one computer and leave dial-up on my other computers?
A.

Yes.

Q.  If I cannot connect to the Internet, is there some checking I can do myself before calling support?
A.

If you are connected via wireless, Power down your computer, wireless bridge, and router (if you have one). Then, power on the bridge, followed by the router, followed by the PC. If you have a USB device connected directly into your PC, you will just need to reboot your PC. If you are connected directly through the Powerline, unplug the modem and power off your PC. Then, plug the modem back in and reboot your PC. If this does not resolve the issue, you can try the Powerline modem in a different outlet. Also, make sure that you do not have the modem plugged into a battery backup, surge suppressor or anything other than directly to the wall outlet.

Q.  If my Internet connection seems to be running slow, is there anything I need to check to make sure my computer is functioning well?
A.

Viruses and Spyware/Adware have become an increasing threat to your PC and your online experience. Make sure that you have an up-to-date virus-scanning program. We recommend that you scan your computer frequently. Also, make sure to scan your PC for spyware/adware that may have ended up on your machine. These common threats have been proven to degrade your performance significantly. We also would recommend a firewall to stop potential attacks to your computer. Windows XP comes with a built in firewall that you can use for your protection and your peace of mind.

Q.  If one or two websites are loading very slowly, is there a problem with my connection?
A.

Some websites will slow down when they receive a large amount of traffic going to them. If you have one or two sites that load slowly, it could be the sites. Typically, there will be a link towards the bottom of the page to contact the webmaster in charge of the site with problems.

Q.  Why does my Duquesne Broadband Wireless Internet signal seem to weaken at times?
A.

This could be caused by interference to the 2.4Ghz channel used by the wireless. Most devices in your home will not interfere with your reception. But on the rare occasion that this may happen, make sure all cordless phones are away from the receiving device. Cordless phones share this channel. You also might want to turn off any cordless phones to see if it lessens the noise.

Q.  If my PC is in the basement and I do not have an antenna, how can I prevent my signal from cutting out from time to time?
A.

Make sure nothing is blocking the device connecting to the Internet. You also should position the unit as close to a window as possible. It is possible that something outside your house could be blocking the line of sight to the access point.

Q.  Is there a problem if my Powerline modem is plugged directly into the wall, without protection from a surge suppressor?
A.

Absolutely not! These modems are designed to work without the need of surge suppressors or battery backups. The modem actually will only function if it is plugged directly into a wall outlet.

Q.  How do I change my email address?
A.

Just call technical support at 1-800-387-0707 and we will gladly assist you in changing an email address or setting up new accounts.
